Will the Blue Jays Keep Bo Bichette? A Look at Their Backup Plans

The Uncertain Future of Bo Bichette

As Bo Bichette approaches free agency, the Toronto Blue Jays are confronted with a daunting choice. They've repeatedly professed their desire to retain him beyond the 2026 season. However, with teams eager to fill infield gaps, the stakes couldn't be higher. Bichette, only 27 and a two-time All-Star, is a player every franchise should be vying for.

The Business of Baseball

Baseball is notoriously a business, and Bichette's potential exit opens up a world of possibilities — not just for him, but for the entire Blue Jays organization. If they fail to secure him, they could be forced to explore other options. Yet, no player currently available on the market can match his caliber.

Enter Jorge Polanco

Recent reports from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon suggest the Blue Jays are eyeing All-Star infielder Jorge Polanco as a contingency plan. Should Bichette choose to leave, Polanco could step into a vital role.

"The beauty of the Seattle Mariners is that they need not rely solely on free agents such as first baseman Josh Naylor, whom they re-signed Monday to a five-year, $92.5 million deal, or second baseman Jorge Polanco, who remains on their wish list," Rosenthal and Sammon wrote. "... Polanco, 32, still would fit nicely, serving mostly as a designated hitter to protect his health but also playing second on days the Mariners want to use Cal Raleigh at DH. But Polanco, according to major-league sources, wants to play out the market."

A Potential Fit?

Polanco is undeniably a talent, boasting 26 home runs and 78 RBIs in 138 games throughout 2025. His addition could lead to an infield consisting of himself alongside Andrés Giménez; thus creating a solid yet not equivalent infield compared to what Bichette delivers. I believe the Blue Jays need to exhaust every option to keep Bichette lest they risk diluting the team's competitive edge.

The Bigger Picture

The Blue Jays are undergoing a crucial period defined by strategic choices. Keeping a player of Bichette's stature can significantly influence their trajectory. With teams always on the lookout to bolster their rosters, including the likes of the Boston Red Sox, who may seek Polanco if they lose third baseman Alex Bregman, the Blue Jays must act swiftly.

Where Do We Go From Here?

The looming decisions surrounding Bo Bichette will shape the Blue Jays' immediate and long-term future. As fans, we deserve transparency and commitment from management regarding their intentions. The fans invested in this team expect to see stars like Bichette take the field in Toronto for years to come.
