It's been a whirlwind few weeks for Zach Top. He recently clinched his first Grammy Award in the newly minted category of Best Traditional Country Album. "It still feels surreal," he shares. Winning for his second album, Ain't In It For My Health, he shocked the country music world by beating out iconic figures like Willie Nelson.

"When they announced it, they said the title of the record, and I was looking around for who was getting up to accept the award. Then it suddenly hit me—it was mine!"

A Genre's Evolution

The introduction of the Best Traditional Country category at this year's Grammys indicates a broader recognition of country music's evolution. Alongside this award, the best contemporary country album was awarded to rapper-turned-country star Jelly Roll, showing the genre's flexibility and its rich roots in diverse influences.

"It's cool there's a spot for hillbillies like me," Zach jokes, acknowledging how contemporary country has dominated awards for years. He reflects on the sweeping changes, stating, "I feel like it's opened up a lot, allowing new fans to fall in love with the traditional sounds of our music." His aim is to preserve authenticity while welcoming fresh fans through the doors of traditional country.

The Sound of Tradition

Top, barely two years into his career, gained over six million monthly listeners on Spotify by staying true to his craft. He describes his music as a natural extension of his love for country songs from the past:

"It's just what comes out of me when I open my mouth or play the guitar. I grew up loving the really, really old stuff, so it makes sense that I landed somewhere similar."

Connecting with Younger Audiences

His concert venues are increasingly filled with younger fans eager to experience a more genuine form of country music. "We get a lot of younger people at the shows. They want to return to the roots—the traditions we know and love," he explains. He feels fortunate to have risen to fame at a time when fans appreciate something raw versus the more heavily produced, hip-hop-influenced tracks dominating radio.

The Road Ahead

Zach's undeniable success leads him to international stages, including his upcoming headlining slot at the C2C Festival in the UK, the largest country music festival outside North America. He views this as an obligation to fans who resonate with his sound:

"If there are fans worldwide that want to hear my music, I feel I have an obligation to take a show to where they are. It's such an exciting time for country music with its global love and attention!"

The Future Is Bright

With plans to headline various country festivals across the U.S. and the ambition of writing his next album, Top conveys an admirable lack of pressure. “I don't have an existential crisis about keeping the country music torch burning. It's just that people are going crazy for what I'm doing, and I want to keep doing it.”
