Reviving America's Education: Insights from Iron Academy and Academy31

Reimagining Education

Education remains one of the most pressing issues of our time. The decline in educational outcomes over decades has led me to question the very foundations we stand on. During my recent Walk Across America through North Carolina, I had the opportunity to visit Iron Academy and Academy31, two institutions embodying a fresh approach to education—one rooted in faith and character.

Iron Academy: Training Young Men

Entering Iron Academy was a revelation. These boys, taught in a single-gender environment, exuded a sense of responsibility and determination rarely found in today's youth. The students, with their firm handshakes and meaningful conversations, depicted a transformation that went beyond academic achievement. Here, education is not a mere conveyance of knowledge; it's about shaping character and instilling integrity.

“The purpose of school is to go home each day having learned something of consequence.”

The 15:1 teacher-student ratio fosters more than just academic excellence; it builds relationships. Teachers know every student's name and their individual stories, crucial for nurturing young men of biblical character. I found that the school's curriculum goes beyond traditional subjects, emphasizing public speaking, physical training, and practical skills while rooting everything in Scripture.

Academy31: Empowering Young Women

Next, I walked over to Academy31, and though separated by a building, the atmosphere felt connected. The girls here, like their male counterparts, were grounded—confident, capable, and ready to take on the world. They were studying a range of subjects from Latin to cooking, all while being guided by older peers, fostering a sense of community and mutual respect.

“The world doesn't get to tell them who they are—God already did.”

Academy31 cultivates a nurturing environment where girls can grow into their identities without external pressures. The strength and independence I witnessed were reminiscent of the Proverbs 31 woman—smart, capable, and kind. Their education is more than grades; it's about understanding their worth and purpose.

The Evidence of Success

The results are clear. Iron Academy reports an impressive average 8.7-point IQ increase in students after their first year. This data reflects a deep, abiding change in attitudes, not just tests and numbers. Children who once struggled are now standing tall, embodying the values and virtues nurtured within these walls. What truly resonated with me was the way the boys and girls learn to respect one another, laying the groundwork for future relationships grounded in honor and integrity.

Addressing the Real Issues

I couldn't help but reflect on the stark contrast between these institutions and the situations I've witnessed back on the South Side of Chicago. Too often, we throw money at problems without addressing the underlying issues in education. A lack of focus on character and values has led to a cycle of despair in certain communities. Iron Academy and Academy31 provide a powerful counter-narrative, showcasing that dedicated, principled approaches can yield extraordinary results.

This visit solidified my belief: we do not need more reports or celebrity endorsements. What we require are more schools like Iron Academy and Academy31—institutions guided by faith, teaching students to grow into strong young men and women who are prepared to lead. While the educational landscape may seem bleak, I felt a flicker of hope during my visit, a potential blueprint for revitalizing our entire system.

The Path Forward

As I return to Chicago, I am invigorated with plans to establish similar schools through Project H.O.O.D., providing a strong foundation rooted in biblical values. Education must extend beyond academics; it should address the formation of character and the moral compass of our youth.

“Somebody has to build them on purpose.”

This is an urgent call to action. The work being done at Iron Academy and Academy31 is not just about improving test scores; it's about changing lives. As we strive to raise the next generation, let us commit ourselves to structures that prioritize education in its true sense—the cultivation of strong, principled individuals who will carry the torch for future generations.
